BizTown: 8:30am - 1:30pm
JA BizTown is a simulated workshop located inside the Junior Achievement facility; 4th - 6th graders (primarily 5th graders) run the economy and become producers and consumers for the day. This simulation combines in-class learning with the “real world.” Students have to complete 15 in-class lessons before they can attend JA BizTown. During the visit to JA BizTown each student will be pre-assigned to work in a business. The “citizens” of JA BizTown had to interview for their job prior to their arrival to JA BizTown. Each business will have a CEO and CFO assigned. Students will learn to operate a bank, credit union, restaurant, city hall, newspaper, newsroom, retail store and several other businesses. Each student will be given a debit card, a checkbook and JA BizTown cash.
Finance Park: 8:45am - 1:45pm
JA Finance Park is a simulated workshop located inside the Junior Achievement Kohl’s Education Center. This workshop is geared toward 7th thru 12th graders; in fact, every 8th grader in the Milwaukee Public School system must attend JA Finance Park. This simulation is an authentic reality based, hands-on economic and educational program for middle and high school students introducing young people to new concepts centered on personal finance, decision making and career exploration. This program enables students to build a foundation for making intelligent and lifelong personal finance decisions. Students receive family and income scenarios, then visit several businesses to pay bills such as insurance, clothing, food, transportation, housing, childcare, utilities, credit cards and several other real world expenses. Students are sole providers for their family and must accommodate the needs of the family without overspending. The students are required to complete 18 in-class lessons prior to their visit to JA Finance Park!
